Tennis Loses to No. 20 Washington and Lee

The Oglethorpe men's tennis team lost to No. 20 Washington and Lee Monday afternoon at the Downing Howell Courts, 6-3. The loss drops them to 1-2 on the season.

The Petrels won three-of six singles matches on the day, but were swept in the doubles matches, putting them behind the eight-ball.

The team of sophomores Ben Hirsch and Kirk Zhao lost 8-3, but the other two doubles teams, Ethan Motz/Nick Roby and Bryan Bailey/C.J. Antonio were up a break. However, things went bad for both, as Motz and Roby lost 8-6 while Bailey and Antonio lost 9-7.

Down 3-0 entering the singles matches, the Petrels needed to win five of the six matches against the 20th-ranked team in the nation. It got even more difficult after the first singles match, as Hirsch fell to his opponent in the No. 4 match 6-4, 6-1.

Roby won his singles match in the No. 6 slot, though, 6-3, 6-4, drawing the Petrels to within 4-1. However, the visiting Generals won the day when Motz lost his match to the 12th-ranked player in the nation, Hayden White, 6-0, 6-3. The result clinched the victory for Washington and Lee.

However, the Petrels did well in the rest of the singles matches. Antonio defeated his opponent 6-4, 6-4 in the No. 2 slot, while Zhao won his No. 5 match 6-4, 6-2. In addition, Bailey fought valiantly in the second set of a 6-1, 7-6(5) loss in the No. 3 slot.

The Petrels will next be in action Friday afternoon, when they take on Maryville in a joint match with the women's tennis team at 3 p.m. on the Howell Courts.
