On a frigid Sunday afternoon in Atlanta, the Oglethorpe men's tennis team defeated Savannah Art and Design-Atlanta 6-3 on the Downing Howell Courts.
The Petrels took two of the three doubles matches, giving themselves an early 2-1 lead and meaning they only had to win half of the six singles matches to take home the victory on the day. After Oglethorpe fell behind 1-0, senior Bryan Bailey and freshman C.J. Antonio won their doubles match 8-5, while sophomores Ben Hirsch and Kirk Zhao won their match 8-3.
In the singles matches, freshman Nick Roby drew the Petrels closer to a victory, winning his No. 6 match 6-0, 6-3. With a 3-1 Oglethorpre lead, SCAD-Atlanta won the No. 2 singles match to draw back to within a match, 3-2. Zhao almost immediately gave the Petrels the lead back on the day, winning the No. 5 match 6-2, 6-0.
The Petrels were now within a match of clinching the dual match, leading 4-2. The No. 1 singles match, though, featuring junior Ethan Motz, went SCAD-Atlanta's way, drawing the dual match back to 4-3.
At the time, Hirsch was entering the third set of his match, while Bailey was up a set but down a break in the second. The Petrels needed one of these to go their way to clinch the day. As it turned out, both went their way. Hirsch blew his opponent away in the third set, winning 4-6, 6-4, 6-0, clinching victory for the Petrels.
After the outcome was decided, Bailey turned around the second set of his match, winning 6-4, 6-4.
The victory improves the Petrels to 2-2 on the season. They will next take the court Friday at 2 p.m., when they invite Huntingdon onto the Downing Howell Courts for both men's and women's matches.
