The Oglethorpe men's tennis team picked up a big win to start its SAA campaign Thursday afternoon, defeating in-state rival Berry 9-0 in Mount Berry, Ga.
The two teams decided to start this dual match with the singles portion of the competition first, and the Petrels came out on fire. Freshman Briton Richardson picked up the first win of the afternoon 6-2, 6-2. That was followed by freshman Nick Roby downing his Vikings opponent 6-3, 6-1. Senior Bryan Bailey won 6-0, 6-1 to give the Petrels the early 3-0 lead.
Sophomore Kirk Zhao followed 6-2, 6-0, bringing the Petrels to within a match of winning the afternoon. It didn't take long, either. Almost immediately, freshman C.J. Antonio closed the afternoon down, winning his match 6-1, 6-3.
It took a little while longer for junior Ethan Motz to shut down his opponent in the No. 1 singles match, but he did so, winning 7-5, 2-6, 10-3, giving the Petrels a clean sweep of the singles matches.
This allowed head coach Peter Howell to get some experience for his newcomers in the doubles portion of the afternoon. A team of Richardson and sophomore Warren Robinson played very well in the No. 3 doubles slot, defeating their opponents, 8-2.
By the end of the afternoon, the Petrels had a clean sweep of all matches. The Petrels improve to 5-2 on the season, and are now 1-0 in SAA play. They will welcome Christopher Newport to the Downing Howell Courts Saturday morning at 9 a.m. in their final dual match before heading to Orlando for their spring break trip next week.
