The Oglethorpe men's tennis team took out the Piedmont Lions on the Downing Howell Courts Wednesday afternoon, defeating them 8-1.
The squad took the first two doubles matches to take an early 2-0 lead before Piedmont scored a victory in No. 1 doubles to cut the Petrels' lead to 2-1. The team of Bryan Bailey and C.J. Antonio won 8-4 at No. 2 while the No. 3 team of Briton Richardson and Nick Roby took down their match, 8-4.
The Petrels dominated singles, however. Antonio won his No. 2 match 6-2, 6-1 to start the Petrels' singles run. Bailey continued it with a 6-2, 6-2 victory at No. 3, pulling Oglethorpe to within a match of clinching the day, 4-1.
The clinch came quickly, as Ethan Motz came through with a solid win out of the No. 1 position, winning in straight sets, 6-4, 6-1.
Rounding out the day, Oglethorpe got another victory from Kirk Zhao at No. 4, 6-1, 6-0. Ben Hirsch easily won by the same score at No. 5, while Roby posted an easy win, as well, defeating his No. 6 opponent 6-2, 6-0.
The win improves the Stormy Petrels to 15-4 on the season. They will round out SAA regular-season play this weekend, when they travel to Hendrix on Saturday and Rhodes on Sunday. Both dual matches get started at 10 a.m. Eastern time.
