The Oglethorpe men's tennis team cruised to a 7-2 victory over Middle Georgia State Friday afternoon on the Howell Tennis Courts, defeating a team currently ranked 16th in the nation among junior college teams.
The Stormy Petrels got three straight wins at doubles to start the afternoon off. C.J. Antonio/Nick Roby won 8-5 at No. 1, Ben Hirsch/Cedric Andre took down the No. 2 match 8-3, and Matt Jones/Kirk Zhao scored an 8-2 victory at No. 3.
In the singles competition, most of the normal top six got a rest leading into Saturday's big match against SAA opponent Rhodes, giving an opportunity for a few Petrels who've gotten limited playing time so far this year to see some action. Hirsch was the lone exception, taking the No. 1 singles match 6-2, 6-4. Caleb Cyprian got a win via retirement at No. 3, while Jimmy Nuckolls picked up a big win at No. 5, defeating his opponent 6-2, 6-0. Matt Roberson rounded it out at No. 6 with a 6-0, 6-2 victory.
The victory improves the Petrels to 10-8 on the season. They'll take on the aforementioned Rhodes Lynx at 11:30 a.m. Saturday before finishing their SAA regular-season slate against Hendrix at the same time on Sunday. The Petrels will celebrate Senior Day on Sunday, as they'll honor Cedric Andre, the lone senior on the squad, for both his on and off-field contributions to the program.
