The Oglethorpe men's tennis team secured second place in the SAA Sunday, and the No. 2 seed in the conference tournament that goes along with it, with a comprehensive 8-1 victory over Hendrix on the Howell Tennis Courts.
The Stormy Petrels, currently ranked 11th in the Atlantic South, started the match out on the right foot, sweeping the doubles portion, 3-0. C.J. Antonio and Nick Roby, currently the 15th ranked doubles team in the region, put away their match 8-3, while Ben Hirsch and Cedric Andre, who was honored before the match as part of Senior Day, cruised 8-2 at No. 2. Kirk Zhao and Matt Jones completed the sweep at No. 3, 8-0.
In the singles portion, the Petrels let some of their players who don't get as much playing time shine, and two of them won back-to-back to clinch the match, 5-0. Caleb Cyprian took down the No. 6 match, 6-0, 6-1, while Jimmy Nuckolls won at No. 5 in straight sets, 6-2, 6-0. Antonio and Hirsch got wins at Nos. 1 and 2, with Hirsch winning 6-3, 6-0 at 2 and Antonio, currently the 24th ranked singles player in the region, won 6-3, 6-2 at No. 1. Zhao won in straight sets at No. 3, 6-0, 6-4, to complete the eight Oglethorpe victories.
With the win, the Petrels improve to 12-8 on the season, 5-1 in SAA play. Their lone loss came against Sewanee, the conference's regular-season champion. The team will prepare to travel to Murfreesboro, Tenn., for the SAA Championships in two weeks, but will first take on Washington and Lee Monday afternoon at 3 p.m. on the Howell Courts. The visitors sit 24th in the nation and fifth in the Atlantic South coming into the match.
