Men's Tennis Suffers Difficult SAA Semifinal Loss to Birmingham-Southern, Sees Season End

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. - The No. 2 seed Oglethorpe men's tennis team saw their season end Saturday afternoon as they suffered a difficult defeat at the hands of No. 3 seed Birmingham-Southern. The Stormy Petrels dropped the dual match 6-3 at Old Fort Park in Murfreesboro, Tenn.

The Petrels got off to an excellent start, winning their No. 1 doubles match 8-2 with C.J. Antonio and Nick Roby. However, the Panthers would come back to take the remaining two doubles matches and turn the dual match upside down. At No. 3 doubles, Kirk Zhao and Matt Jones delivered a hard-fought match, but could not quite close it out. They lost, 8-6. This put the Petrels behind 2-1 going into singles.

In the singles competition, the Petrels got a big 6-1, 6-1 victory from Antonio. In addition, they got a book-end win at No. 6 from Jones, who won his match 6-3, 6-1. However, the Panthers managed to take all of the remaining singles matches in straight sets to secure the victory.

This marks the second consecutive year that the Petrels have been knocked out of the SAA Tournament as the No. 2 seed in the semifinal round. The loss means they finish the season 13-10. They will also likely wind the season up ranked in the Atlantic South region for the second consecutive year. They entered Saturday's match rated 11th in the region.
