Lady Petrels Defeated in Conference Home Opener

The Oglethorpe women's basketball team dropped their conference home opener Friday night, losing to Birmingham-Southern 69-58 on New Year's Day.

Though they held Birmingham-Southern to 40 percent shooting, the Lady Petrels never got untracked offensively, shooting just 30 percent themselves. They also shot just 19 percent from three-point range, and 47 percent from the free-throw line.

Oglethorpe never led, and the score was tied only twice, both in the first half.

The Lady Petrels' leading scorer was Rena Crossland with 15 points. Chelsea MacDonald knocked home 14 points, and Kaci Palmore had six points and 16 rebounds.

The loss drops Oglethorpe to 6-5 on the year, 1-1 in SCAC play. They will next be in action on Sunday afternoon, when they will host Rhodes at noon.
