The women's basketball team lost to Mississippi College in the Coaches vs. Cancer Classic in Montgomery, Ala. on Thursday afternoon, 67-60. The Petrels trailed by 16 points with less than 5 minutes to play, rallied to cut the lead to 5, and had a shot up to slice it to 3 but could not convert before eventually falling to the Choctaws.
Sarah Jones, who tallied a game-high 21 points, buried a three-pointer to start the scoring just 9 seconds into the game. Unfortunately for Oglethorpe, it would be their only lead as the Choctaws rattled off consecutive hoops to gain an advantage they would never relinquish. The Petrels fell behind by as many as 11 in the first half before heading into the locker room trailing by 7.
The Choctaws held the Petrels at arm's length throughout the second half and, following a steal and layup, led 60-46 with 5:12 to play. Oglethorpe, however, staged a valiant comeback, unleashing a 12-2 run to cut the lead to 62-56 with just under two minutes to play. The Petrels had a chance to really put the Choctaws on their heels when they got a defensive stop and Jones took aim at a three-pointer that would have sliced the lead in half with 1:30 left. The shooting guard's shot rimmed out though, and Mississippi College nailed their free throws down the stretch to seal the win despite the Petrels trimming the advantage down to 5 on two occasions.
The Petrels struggled from the field (16-of-49, 33%) but managed to outrebound the Choctaws 36-32 to hang around the game. Jones made 5-of-8 three-pointers on her way to 21 points and Kyana Jenkins and Morghan Brandon each tallied 9 points and 5 rebounds in the loss.
Oglethorpe is now 3-8 on the season and will face Ripon College tomorrow at 2:00 p.m. to finish off the Coaches vs. Cancer Classic in Montgomery.
