Red Hawks Race Past Lady Petrels

The women's basketball team lost to Ripon College in the Coaches vs. Cancer Classic held in Montgomery, Ala. on Friday afternoon, 65-42. The Red Hawks started the game with a 14-0 burst that put the Petrels on notice this would be a long afternoon.

After the opening tip the score was 14-0 Ripon before Sarah Giles broke the ice for Oglethorpe at the 14:32 mark with a layup. The Petrels managed to whittle the margin down to seven points following two Riley Cerone free throws and a layup by Katie Weeks to make it 23-16 with 5:45 left in the half. But the Red Hawks responded with another spurt to open up a 34-20 halftime advantage. The Petrels made just 8-of-27 shots in the first stanza and did not make a three-pointer. The Red Hawks' Katie Raymond posted 18 first half points to nearly outscore the Petrels by herself.

Oglethorpe briefly trimmed the Ripon lead down to 9 points in the second half but the Red Hawks pounced again and pushed the margin up to as many as 27 points before closing out the 65-42 win. The Petrels connected on only 15-of-54 shots (28%) and were outrebounded 44-26 in the loss.

Riley Cerone notched 8 points and Mareva Bone tallied 7 for the cold shooting Petrels. At 3-9 on the season, Oglethorpe will get back into conference play exclusively beginning with a Jan. 6 contest versus Rhodes College on Pinholster Court at 6:00 p.m.
