Women Surge Past Sewanee at Homecoming
The women's basketball team won for the fifth time in their last seven outings when they topped Sewanee during a Homecoming celebration on Pinholster Court, 67-64. Down 3 at halftime, the Lady Petrels used a 9-0 run early in the second half to forge a lead they would not relinquish.
Sewanee got out to an early lead and built their largest advantage of the game at 12-6 with 12:30 to play in the first half before Oglethorpe mounted a rally. The Petrels used a 10-0 spurt in which 5 different players contributed points to forge ahead. The Tigers responded a 14-7 burst of their own to close out the half and head to the locker room with a 28-25 lead.
The Tigers still led by 4 points with 16:57 to play when the Lady Petrels made their decisive move with a 9-0 push to open up a 5 point advantage. The spurt began with an Aisha Atwater layup and was followed by buckets from Ky'Laine Rogers and Katie Weeks before Sarah Jones capped it with a three-ball.
The Tigers would fight back to keep Oglethorpe from running away but the Petrels executed down the stretch to earn their fifth victory in their last seven tries. Playing her final weekend on Pinholster Court, Katie Weeks celebrated Senior Day with 13 points, 4 rebounds and two assists. Junior Mareva Bone added a monster performance with 16 points and 13 rebounds while Sarah Giles rounded out the Petrels in double-figures with 12 points in the win.
Oglethorpe is now 8-15 on the season and will play their home finale against Centre this Sunday at 1:00 p.m.
