Panthers Top Lady Petrels in Birmingham

The women's basketball team lost their season finale to Birmingham-Southern in Alabama on Saturday evening, 69-51. The Panthers used a 23-6 run in the second half to turn a tight three-point contest into an easy home court win.

Despite falling behind 16-3 at the outset of the contest, the Petrels managed to fight back against the Panthers with a prolonged 19-8 run to close the gap to 24-22 with 2:55 to play in the first half. Sarah Giles and Sarah Jones combined to score 8 and 5 points, respectively, in the spurt as the Petrels managed to rattle the Panthers a bit. Southern tallied the last 5 points of the half to head into the locker room with a 29-22 advantage.

Oglethorpe got three straight defensive stops to start the second half and used buckets from Sarah Giles and Morghan Brandon to make the score 29-26 with 18:20 to play. The Petrels, however, would not score during the next 6 minutes of the contest as the Panthers built a 40-26 lead with 12:30 left. Southern then put the game away by putting together another 15-6 burst that extended the lead out to 20 at the 8:23 mark.

Giles led the Petrels with 12 points, 4 rebounds and three blocks on the night. Jones added 10 points while Riley Cerone made 3-of-5 from beyond the arc for 9 points in the loss.

Oglethorpe finishes their season 8-17 overall and 5-11 in SCAC competition.
