The Oglethorpe women's basketball team trounced Spelman, 79-55, Tuesday night in Dorough Field House, improving their record to 2-0 on the season.
The Lady Petrels came out of the gates really strong again in the first half. After falling behind 4-0 very early in the game, Oglethorpe answered with a 36-9 run to take a 23-point lead with a minute left in the first half. They cruised into halftime with a 38-18 lead.
In the second half, it was more of the same from the Lady Petrels. They traded baskets with the visiting Jaguars for the first 10 minutes of the second half, holding a 58-35 lead at the midway point of the period. But from that point, they went on a 13-2 run over the next three minutes to take a 34-point lead, their largest of the game. From there, Oglethorpe cruised home for the 25-point win.
Senior center Sarah Giles led the Lady Petrels in scoring, tallying 17 points on 6-of-11 shooting. She also grabbed nine rebounds, another team high, but her defensive work down low was stellar, as she swatted six Spelman shots. Freshman guard Gabby Cole finished with 14 points on 7-of-13 shooting. Freshman guard Kalin Williams had an excellent game, as well, scoring 14 points on 5-of-12 shooting. She grabbed six rebounds, as well.
The Lady Petrels really locked down the Jaguars defensively, holding them to under 24 percent shooting for the game. Oglethorpe also outscored the Jaguars 24-4 on the fast break.
The 2-0 Lady Petrels will next take the court this weekend, when they will travel to Demorest, Ga., for the SAA/USA South Division III Classic. They will take on home-team Piedmont on Saturday at 4 p.m., then battle LaGrange on Sunday at 2 p.m.
