Women's Basketball Drops First Road Game of Season, 69-66
The Oglethorpe women's basketball team went on the road for the first time this season and couldn't quite pull out the victory, losing 69-66 in Demorest, Ga., on Day 1 of the SAA/USA South Classic.
The two teams finished the first seven minutes of the game tied at 12-12. Then, over the next three minutes, the Lady Petrels went on a 10-0 run to take a 22-12 lead. Freshman guard Gabby Cole contributed two baskets to the run, while freshman guard Kalin Williams capped the run with a bucket of her own.
However, Piedmont went on a 16-4 run over the next five minutes to take a 28-26 lead. The home-standing Lions would carry a 36-35 lead into halftime.
The two teams would play a very even second half, with neither team leading by more than four points. The lead changed hands 13 times in the half. With 3:18 left in the game, the Lady Petrels took a 62-61 lead on a Cole jumper. However, Piedmont followed that up with a five-point run to take a four-point lead with 2:15 remaining. The Lions were then able to hold Oglethorpe off for the remainder of the game. Oglethorpe had one final possession down 69-66, but Williams' three-pointer at the buzzer would not fall and the Lady Petrels suffered the three-point loss.
Senior center Sarah Giles scored 10 points, and was huge down low, grabbing 18 rebounds and tallying seven blocks. Cole finished with a game-high 20 points, while Williams finished with 12.
The 2-1 Lady Petrels will complete their schedule in the SAA/USA South Classic in Demorest on Sunday afternoon, as they take on LaGrange at 2 p.m.
