The Oglethorpe women's basketball team suffered a loss to LaGrange Sunday afternoon in Demorest, Ga., at the SAA/USA South Classic, 100-82. The loss dropped the Lady Petrels to 0-2 over the course of the weekend and 2-2 on the season.
The Lady Petrels were behind the eight-ball early in this one, as the LaGrange Panthers rode very hot shooting to a 21-point lead 10 minutes into the first half, 33-12. Oglethorpe came back quickly, going on a 16-5 run to cut the LaGrange lead to 10, 38-28, with 6:24 remaining. LaGrange pushed the lead back to 18 with two minutes left in the half, though. Oglethorpe cut it back to 14 at halftime, 51-37.
In the second half, LaGrange pushed the lead back out to 20 quickly, but a run of eight straight points by Oglethorpe freshman guard Gabby Cole cut the lead to 12, 63-51, with 16:25 remaining. Over the next six minutes, the Lady Petrels traded baskets with LaGrange, keeping the game within 15 points, getting it as close as 11 with 10:18 remaining. However, from that point, LaGrange pushed the game back out to an 18-point spread over the next minute and pretty much cruised from there to the 18-point win.
LaGrange shot 43 percent from beyond-the-arc in the game, 53 percent in the first half, while Oglethorpe went 0-for-7 from three in the first half and finished the game shooting 27 percent from long distance.
Cole scored a game-high 23 points and shot 2-of-6 from three. Freshman guard Kalin Williams added 18 points and three assists. Senior center Sarah Giles came through with her first double-double of the season, scoring 10 points and grabbing 10 rebounds. She also swatted three LaGrange shots away.
The Lady Petrels will next take the court Thursday evening for their SAA opener, when they will take on Berry at 6 p.m. at Dorough Field House.
