Women's Basketball Loses to Transylvania in Montgomery
The Oglethorpe women's basketball team lost its opening game of the Coaches vs. Cancer Classic Friday morning in Montgomery, Ala., falling to Transylvania, 74-52.
The Lady Petrels got behind the eight-ball early in this one, falling behind 16-0 in the first six minutes of the game. But they immediately answered with a 13-2 run of their own to get back to within five points with 10:45 remaining in the opening stanza.
Transylvania pulled the lead back out again and led by 17 with 4:38 remaining in the half, but Oglethorpe went on a 13-5 run to close out the half and cut the Transylvania lead to 41-32 at the break.
In the second half, Oglethorpe kept the deficit in the 10-point range for the first several minutes. However, Transylvania effectively put the game away with a 20-7 run over the back half of the second stanza, giving them a 69-48 lead with 3:11 left. Transylvania cruised to the easy victory from there.
Oglethorpe shot just 30 percent to Transylvania's 35 percent over the course of the game. Transylvania shot 42 percent from three-point range for the game, and outrebounded the Lady Petrels 60-32, including grabbing 24 offensive boards.
Freshman guard Kendelle Culpepper scored 12 points on 4-of-9 shooting, including 3-of-5 from beyond the arc. Freshman guard Kalin Williams finished with 13 points on the morning.
The loss drops the Lady Petrels to 2-9 on the season. They will play the second and final game of their schedule at the Coaches vs. Cancer Classic Saturday afternoon at 2 p.m. Eastern against host-team Huntingdon. It will be the Lady Petrels' second contest against Huntingdon this season.
