Women Knock Off Jaguars, Improve to 2-0
Spelman struck first with a goal off the head of Taylor Tindle
in the first half to give the Jags a 1-0 lead. Working hard for the
equalizer, the Petrels got it in the game's 55th minute when Lexi
Vassell used her head to find an open Shannon Dougherty who cracked
a left-footed goal into the back of the net.
The match looked headed for overtime until sophomore Eliza Newland
blasted a free kick past Spelman's keeper for the game winner in
the 82nd minute. Newland's shot came from 25 yards out and could
not be stopped by the Jags Amanda Tyler.
For the night, Spelman managed 8 shots while Oglethorpe got off 7.
Four of the Petrels shots were on target while only three of the
Jaguars shots made it on goal.
The Petrels are back in action next Thursday afternoon when they
take on Tennessee Temple at 3:30 p.m. on Salamone Field.
