Fall Sports Preview: Women's Soccer
We continue previewing the fall sport teams with a look at the 2011 Oglethorpe women's soccer team.
2011 Women's Soccer Preview
The 2011 Oglethorpe women's soccer campaign will be highly anticipated after the Stormy Petrels broke through last season with a couple of "firsts" that show the team's fortunes pointing in the right direction. The 201 Petrels posted an 8-9-2 overall record to give the program their first 8-win season since the fall of 2000. In the process, the Petrels vanquished some recent conference demons by topping Millsaps in the season finale for Oglethorpe's first victory over an SCAC opponent in nearly five years.
Adding to the cause for optimism in 2011 is the fact that head coach Alan Woods returns with 12 players from last year's roster, including 7 starters. Highlighting the returnees is sophomore sensation Clara St. Urbain (Marietta, Ga.) who became the first player in program history to receive one of the four individual postseason awards the SCAC bestows in earning Newcomer-of-the-Year status. St. Urbain led the 2010 Petrels with 17 points on 8 goals and one assist from her attacking forward position and will look to find the back of the net even more in 2011.
Joining the key returnees is defensive specialist senior Kristen Koch (Indianapolis, Ind.). Koch garnered All-SCAC Third Team honors for the Petrels last season and scored the game-winner over Millsaps to end five years of conference futility. Another impact senior for coach Woods will be the speedy Alexandria Vassell (Atlanta, Ga.) Vassell was second on the squad in points (13) and goals scored (6) in 2010 and has the skills to strike at any time. The Petrels will also benefit from the veteran returning services of defensive stalwarts seniors Jordan Weaver (Dacula, Ga.) and Eliza Newland (Hamilton, Ga.). Senior Sasha Alonzo (Bethlehem, Ga.), who tallied two goals in 2010, rounds out the seniors coming back to the pitch this year.
Along with St. Urbain the team returns several sophomores who played valuable roles in 2010 led by Lexie Craig (Alpharetta, Ga.) who started 14 contests in 2010. The Petrels also get back sophomore talents Katie Muller (Marietta, Ga., 16 stats in 2010), Spenser Knauss (Louisville, Ky.), Lisanne Edelman (Amsterdam, Netherlands) and Kendall Burke (Burtonsville, Md). A veteran team with no freshmen, the 2011 squad features four newcomers: junior goalkeeper Elia Breijo (Ferrol, Spain), senior forward Elvira Hernandez (Madrid, Spain), senior defender Kim Overmier (Cumming, Ga.) and sophomore midfielder Ginny Johnston (Fredericksburg, Va.).
The 2011 home schedule features nonconference dates against Spelman (Sept 12), Warren Wilson (Sept. 24), Huntingdon (September 28) and LaGrange (October 12). The home SCAC matches feature Austin (September 30), Dallas (October 2), Birmingham-Southern (October 22), Centre (October 28) and Sewanee (October 30). The team will celebrate 50 years of soccer being played on the Oglethorpe campus during a reception immediately following the men's 3:00 p.m. game against Birmingham-Southern on October 22.
