The women's soccer team dropped their season opener to Agnes Scott in Decatur on Wednesday night, 2-0. The Petrels outshot the Scotties 29-6 but could not muster a goal en route to the tough defeat.
The Scotties drew first blood in the game's 11th minute when Maddie Shaul played a ball to Clara Kienzle who got behind the Petrels defense in the box for the strike. Undaunted, Oglethorpe continuously peppered the Scotties goal to no avail. The Petrels fired 15 first half shots and 14 more in the second, but could not get one past keeper Ashley Watts. In all, 11 of the 29 shots were on target but Watts made the save every time.
The Scotties doubled their lead in the second half on a goal in the 76th minute that came via a free kick from 25 yards out by Amanda Hernandez. The Petrels earned 9 corner kicks in the contest but could not tally a strike on their set pieces.
Oglethorpe is now 0-1 on the season and will look for their first victory of 2011 when they face Spelman this Monday on Salamone Field at 5:00 p.m.
