The women's soccer team recorded their first win of 2011 by topping Spelman College on Monday night in overtime, 2-1. Knotted at a goal apiece after regulation, the Petrels secured the win in the home opener when Lexi Vassell found the back of the net 8 minutes into the first overtime period.
Oglethorpe jumped in front of the Jaguars on a set piece in the game's 25th minute when Jordan Weaver served a corner kick into the box that Lisanne Edelman headed home with authority. Spelman responded immediately, however, tallying a goal just one minute later when Rebekah Rogers incredibly bent her own corner kick into the back of the net.
Neither squad could score over the final 65 minutes of regulation and the game headed into overtime. With just over a minute remaining in the first overtime period Vassell shook free at the top of the box and cracked home the thrilling game-winner.
The Petrels outshot the Jaguars 19-6 on the evening and held a 4-3 edge in corner kicks to even their record at 1-1 on the young season. Oglethorpe is back in action this Wednesday when they travel to face Piedmont College at 4:00 p.m.
