Women Split Weekend Matches with Spelman and Sewanee

The Oglethorpe University women's tennis team split a pair of weekend matches, topping Spelman 6-3 on Friday on Downing Howell Courts and falling to Sewanee 8-1 in Tennessee on Sunday.

The Petrels jumped on Spelman early by claiming two of the three doubles matches. Jayme Danielson and Alison Burt combined at number one to win 8-5 and Sarah Beth Britt and Molly Colvard won at number two, 8-1.

Oglethorpe took four of the six singles matches as well with wins at the two, three, four and six slots. Britt claimed victory at number two, winning 7-5, 6-1 and Colvard won easily at number three, 6-1, 6-0. Burt picked up the victory at number four after her opponent retired down a set and two breaks and Kimberly O'Dell won at number six, 7-5, 4-6 (10-3).

The women had a tougher time with regionally ranked Sewanee on Sunday, however, as they were only able to claim one point in an 8-1 loss. The number two doubles combination of Colvard and Britt fought valiantly from the number two slot before succombing, 8-6 while the numbers one and three doubles teams struggled in their losses (8-0, 8-1 respectively).

Kimberly O'Dell scratched out the lone Petrel point in the contest by winning another thriller at the six spot, this time 1-6, 6-3 (10-4).

With the results Oglethorpe is now 2-2 on the season and will get set to square off with Agnes Scott on Downing Howell Courts at 3:00 p.m. this Monday, March 1.
