Lady Netters Split Weekend Road Contests
The women's tennis team split two weekend road contests, falling at Huntingdon College on Saturday before rallying to top Maryville on Sunday. Senior Jayme Danielson enjoyed a perfect 4-0 road trip in singles and doubles play as the Petrels evened their season record at 2-2.
Huntingdon hosted the Lady Netters on Saturday and managed to claim two of thee doubles points on their way to the 7-2 victory. The Petrels earned a point at No. 1 as Jayme Danielson and Katarina Te combined for an 8-6 win, but Oglethorpe's momentum stalled when the No. 2 duo of Caffrey Francis and Kate Siess lost narrowly, 9-7. Clara Reinheimer and Sarah Duff were bested at No. 3 by the score of 8-4 to give the Hawks the edge heading to singles.
Danielson continued her stellar play by winning 6-2, 6-3 at No. 1, but the rest of the women, save Clara Reinheimer at No. 6, went down in straight sets. Complete results from the Huntingdon match are listed below.
The Petrels rebounded nicely at Maryville in Tennessee on Sunday afternoon, earning a hard fought 6-3 victory. This time, the women gutted out two of the three doubles points to set the table for a win.
Danielson and Te won easily at No. 1 by the score of 8-0 but it was the work of the No. 2 duo of Francis and Siess that pushed Oglethorpe over the top. They fought tooth and nail to scratch out a huge point with a 9-8 (6) tiebreaker victory. The No. 3 combination of Reinheimer and Duff nearly made it a doubles sweep but fell in a tiebreaker of their own, 9-8 (5).
The Lady Netters picked up the final three points they needed for the win by getting victories at No.'s 1, 2 and 3 singles from Danielson, Francis and Duff. Duff's, 6-4, 6-3 win clinched the match and Reinheimer added another point with a 6-2, 6-1 win at No. 6. Complete results from the Maryville match are listed beneath the Huntingdon results.
Oglethorpe is now 2-2 on the season and will face Agnes Scott on Downing Howeel Courts on March 1.
