The Oglethorpe women's tennis team fell at Centre 5-0 on Saturday afternoon in Danville, Ky.
The Lady Petrels had a chance in all three doubles matches on Saturday, but couldn't come through in any of them, putting them squarely behind the eight-ball. The Nos. 1 and 3 teams both lost 8-5, then the No. 2 team of Clara Reinheimer and Kate Siess suffered a tough 9-7 loss to complete the doubles sweep.
In the singles portion, Katherine Walker played well out of the No. 1 slot, eventually losing 7-6(5), 6-3. However, this put Centre up 4-0 and they quickly put the match away after that.
After the Lady Colonels clinched at 5-0, the rest of the matches were abandoned due to impending weather. Tricia Groover was ahead 2-0 in the third set of her match at the time that it ended, and Siess finished tied 6-6 in the first set. Siess' match featured an incredible five-minute point, with the players combining for over 175 hits before the point finally ended. The court adjacent to Siess and her opponent finished two whole games in the time that it took to complete the marathon point.
The team drops to 2-11 on the season, 0-3 in SAA play. They will next take the court on Saturday at 11:30 a.m., when they take on Millsaps on the Downing Howell Courts.
