The Oglethorpe women's tennis team fell 5-3 to sixth-seeded Centre in a back-draw match at the SAA Championships in Sewanee, Tenn., Saturday.
The squad got off to a good start in the match, which had to be moved from Murfreesboro, Tenn., to the indoor courts at Sewanee because of rain, taking a 2-1 lead after doubles. Katherine Walker and Mary Ann Hafen won 8-6 at No. 1 doubles, while Tricia Groover and Kate Siess took the No. 2 match, 9-7. Hailey Bowers and Charlsie Johnson dropped the No. 3 match, 8-4, but the Lady Petrels had the lead going into singles.
However, the Lady Colonels were able to turn the tables in the singles competition. They took four of the five completed matches, the lone Oglethorpe win coming from Groover, who won 6-3, 6-4 at No. 4.
The dual match was stopped after Centre won their fifth match, but Siess was down 3-2 in the first set of the sixth singles match at the time it was stopped.
The loss drops the Lady Petrels to 3-17 on the season. They will be awarded seventh place in the SAA Tournament, as Hendrix will not contest the seventh-place matches in either the men's or the women's competitions.
