Women's Tennis Has Solid Day at ITA Regional Championships

Members of the Oglethorpe women's tennis team competed Friday at the ITA Small College South Regional Championships in Sewanee, Tenn., and multiple players will still be playing Saturday morning.

In the main singles draw, Jahaun Freeman-Clark took out her first-round opponent to start the day, defeating Amelia McIssac of Rhodes 2-6, 6-4, 6-3. She then ran into the tournament's No. 3 overall seed in Millsaps' Deena Li Kam Wa. She fought valiantly in the first set, losing 7-5. She ran out of gas in the second, though, falling 6-0 in the second round.

Caffrey Francis received a first-round bye and then faced Sewanee's Annie Veron in the second round, but fell 6-1, 6-1. Katherine Walker lost to Elizabeth Lucas in the first round to Sewanee's Elizabeth Lucas 6-2, 7-5.

In the main doubles draw, Freeman-Clark and Walker won their first round match against Schrock and Van Horn from Mississippi College. However, they ran into seeded Emory duo Gordon and Su in the second round and their run stopped there. Meanwhile, Francis and Ingrid Wilcox lost in Round 1 of their main doubles match Cerny and Seabaugh of Berry, 9-7.

Tricia Groover advanced to the semifinals of the B singles draw. She defeated Hannah Dunlap of Covenant 6-3, 6-1 in the first round, then took out Sewanee's Natalie Van Why in the quarterfinals, 6-0, 6-1. She'll take on Sewanee's Emily Sirbaugh in Saturday's semifinals. Meanwhile, Ingrid Wilcox defeated Mississippi College's Kaylee Kilgo 6-4, 6-1 in the first round, but fell to Rhodes' Julia Greene 6-3, 6-4 in the second round.

In the C singles draw, Hailey Bowers advanced to the quarterfinals when she defeated Covenant's Catherine Landers 6-1, 7-6 in the second round after receiving a first-round bye. Bowers faces off against Centre's Kate Tomney in the quarterfinal round on Saturday. Meanwhile, Charlsie Johnson lost her second round match after a first-round bye. She fell to Centre's Kimberly Randall 6-2, 6-2.

In the B doubles draw, Groover and Bowers knocked out Van Why and Sirbaugh from Sewanee in the first round 8-4, but succumbed to the Rinaldo sisters of Agnes Scott in the quarterfinals.

In the consolation rounds, Walker defeated Caroline Hunt of Meredith, 9-7, and will play Agnes Scott's Mariel Herrera tomorrow. Charlsie Johnson won her first consolation match, 8-0 over Landers. She'll face Sewanee's Hastings Johnson on Saturday. Francis fell to Rhodes' Anna Volkov 8-2 in her first consolation match.

In doubles consolation, Francis and Wilcox find themselves in the final of their draw, having defeated Centre's Tomey and DeLong in their first match. They'll play Centre's Hays and McElovogue on Saturday.
