Members of the Oglethorpe women's tennis team finished a successful run at the ITA Small College South Regional Championships on Saturday, seeing a couple of participants reach the finals of their draws.
Tricia Groover entered the day in the semifinals of the B singles draw against Sewanee's Emily Sirbaugh. Groover won the match in straight sets, 6-3, 6-3, advancing herself to the final against Centre's Maddie Pitt. In the final, Pitt prevailed 6-0, 6-1.
Katherine Walker started the day in the semifinals of the main consolation draw against Mariel Herrera of Agnes Scott. With the consolation matches being decided in a single set, Walker won a hotly contested 8-6 decision to advance to the final. In the final, she took on Meredith's Mary Lawrence Newton, but Newton prevailed, 8-5, in another single-set contest.
Caffrey Francis and Ingrid Wilcox began the day in the final of the main doubles consolation draw. The pair played Hays and McElvogue from Centre in the final and took the match to a tiebreak for the title, but the team from Centre won the tiebreak 7-4 in the end.
In other action, Charlsie Johnson played Sewanee's Hastings Johnson in the semifinals of the singles consolation draw, but Hastings came away with the 8-5 victory. Additionally, Hailey Bowers fell in the quarterfinals of the C singles draw, losing to Centre's Kate Tomey 6-0, 6-0.
All in all, the weekend in Sewanee, Tenn., at the ITA Regional Championships proved to be a success for the Petrels. Three singles or doubles entrants made the final of their draw, and numerous others won matches this weekend.
