The Oglethorpe women's tennis team came back with a 9-0 sweep of Wesleyan (Ga.) in Macon, Ga., the day after suffering a 9-0 sweep at the hands of crosstown rival Emory. The Stormy Petrels now hold a 1-1 record headed into this weekend's Southern Shootout.
The Petrels got an excellent chance to play their young players against the home-standing Wolves and all responded with victories. Sophomores Hailey Bowers, Emma Bernard and Paolette Matute played Nos. 4-6 singles. Bowers won har match 6-1, 4-6, 10-4, as the third set was played as part of a 10-point super-tiebreak after the Stormy Petrels had already clinched the dual match. Bernard won 6-1, 6-1, while Matute performed well, taking down her match 6-1, 6-4.
Bernard and Matute played doubles for the first time and won their No. 3 doubles match, 8-2. Katherine Walker and Ingrid Wilcox took down the No. 1 doubles slot with an 8-1 victory, while Tricia Groover and Bowers won No. 2, 8-1.
Walker clinched the match with a 6-3, 6-0 victory out of the No. 1 singles slot while Wilcox won No. 2 singles 6-1, 6-1.
The 1-1 Petrels will now get set to take on regional No. 17 Birmingham-Southern Saturday at noon to start the Southern Shootout. The match will count as a non-conference match, as the two teams will play in their official SAA match in Birmingham, Ala., later in the season.
