The Oglethorpe women's track team added two more school records to their growing list by breaking two long-standing relay records at yesterday's Sewanee Tiger Indoor Invitational at the University of the South campus.
The 4x400 team of captain Raven Foust, junior Sherry Blystone and freshman newcomers Chelcee Arnold and Katy Galli broke the school record last set indoors back in 1992. Their 4:29 was 2 seconds better than the previous mark. Moments later, Galli joined her teammates, led by senior Bianca Hernould , sophomore Khadija Nisar and freshman Aniiysa Taylor, in making her relay debut, and set the standard for future Petrel women by setting a new Distance Medley record. Hernould had a particularly outstanding meet by also setting her personal record in the mile by 8 seconds. Other women highlights in the non-scoring meet included Liz Weber's PR in the shot put and PR's in the 200 meters by freshmen Taylor and Arnold.
The men's team, which consists of an entire freshman roster except for one junior, showed that they will be a major conference factor later in the season by having a surprisingly strong meet. The shot put team of Austin Collier, Kai Owens and Edgardo Martinez all had personal bests from the last meet and each improved on all their throws. The men's 4x400 relay team just missed the school record. The all freshman team of Kylon Haugabook, Mike Caneega, Jacob Bowman and anchor Luq Mohammed is raw, but showed great promise. Mohammed had a great day by also setting personal records in both the 200m and 400m open while freshman Alexander Johnson's 200 meter debut was voted by the coaching staff as the performance of the meet.
The track and field squads conclude the indoor portion of their schedule next Friday and Saturday in the Vulcan Invitational at the new Crossplex in Birmingham, Ala.
