As spring sports hit full stride this weekend, gopetrels.com is looking ahead at the upcoming campaigns for each team. Here's a look at the 2012 women's track squad.
2012 Women's Track Season Preview
The 2012 Stormy Petrels will be looking to build off its highest finish of SCAC competition in a generation after their 7th place showing in 2011. In order to move into the top level of the conference, head coach Jan Spiro will need to get top performances from a number of seasoned sophomores. The Petrel women broke a total of an amazing 7 school records a year ago, and most of those record holders return to the lineup. A look at the roster reveals opportunity for continued success up and down the roster.
The 2012 squad is lead by sophomore captain Raven Foust who enjoyed a spectacular freshman campaign. Foust was a member of both the school record 4x100 and 4x400 teams and was involved in the single biggest highlight of the season when, at the SCAC Championships, she finished in a first place tie in the high jump before losing a one-on-one jump off that brought the entire meet to a standstill.
Other returning record holders include junior Sherry Blystone who scored at conference in both the long jump and javelin, and sophomore Ky'Laine Rogers who broke the standing 200m record an amazing 3 times during the season. Rogers made the podium twice in the SCAC Championship meet by placing second in the 200 and third in the 100. Rogers was also a member of the 4x100 and 4x400 record setters. The other returning veteran of those teams is versatile sophomore Kyana Jenkins who also long jumps.
The Lady Petrels are excited to welcome a host of freshman who could make their mark as the season progresses. Leading the way is Katy Galli who joins the Petrels after an outstanding New Jersey High school career. Galli has already made her mark with the Petrels by breaking the indoor triple jump record in an early season indoor meet. Galli also is looking to score in both the long jumps and hurdle running events. Other freshmen of note include Chelcee Arnold of Memphis, Tenn., Aniysa Taylor of Irmo, S.C. and Alexys Scott of Jonesboro, Ga.
Veteran leadership will be supplied by Khadija Nisar who set personal records in both the mile and 800 in 2011. Outstanding seniors Bianca Hernould and Liz Weber will help lead the young Petrels into competition. Joining the squad is all-around athlete McKenna Bondarenko who also stars in the fall as a volleyball player.
As always, the 2012 schedule will provide a stiff test for a squad competing in the deepest Division III region in the country. The slate includes visits to Division I Jacksonville State and dual meets at Emory and Millsaps College before the SCAC Championships in Birmingham, Alabama. "I can't wait for the season to get underway," said coach Spiro. "We made big strides last year and I look forward to this squad making a giant leap. We fully expect to send a number of athletes to the NCAA Championships in California."
