The women's volleyball team picked up their first win of the season during tournament play held on the campus of Berry College this weekend. The Petrels were topped by Berry, Mississippi College and Covenant before rallying to best Huntingdon in 5 sets for the team's first win.
The weekend began with a straight sets defeat at the hands of Berry College, 3-0 (25-21. 25-19, 25-12). Anna Marie Disalvo led the Oglethorpe attack against the Vikings with 10 kills and 8 digs while Kaily Yarbrough paced the squad with 13 digs.
Friday's matches concluded with a 3-1 (25-19, 25-27, 25-5, 25-9) loss to the Choctaws of Mississippi College. Kate Cassell managed 11 digs and Disalvo slammed 11 kills to lead Oglethorpe in the match.
On Saturday the Petrels first faced Covenant and lost 3-0 (25-14, 25-19, 25-22). Cassell again led the team in digs with 19 while Mckenna Bondarenko, playing injured, posted a .353 hitting percentage.
Oglethorpe finally broke through in the tournament finale with a thrilling 5-set victory over the Huntingdon Hawks (25-23, 22-25, 17-25, 26-24, 15-12). Molly Buckner blasted 14 kills in the win while Bondarenko kept up her sharp hitting, posting a robust .387 percentage. Disalvo slammed 16 more kills and recorded 15 digs and was named to the All-Tournament Team for her outstanding efforts on the weekend.
The Petrels are now 1-6 on the season and will travel to face Shorter for a mid-week contest before hosting Coastal Georgia and Andrews College on Pinholster Court this coming weekend.
