The volleyball team played four matches this past weekend at Sewanee and secured their first SCAC win of the season by knocking off Rhodes College in the weekend finale, 3-2.
The Petrels dropped the first three matches of the weekend to Colorado College (L, 3-0), Millsaps (L, 3-0) and Hendrix (L, 3-0) before winning Sunday's thriller over Rhodes College.
In the Colorado College match, Oglethorpe was overwhelmed 25-13, 25-13, 25-22 by a Tiger squad that is among the nation's elite. Freshman Anna Marie Disalvo led the Petrels with 11 kills while junior Brittin Dawson added 17 assists. Kate Cassell paced the squad with 14 digs and Kaily Yarbrough served up two aces.
Oglethorpe played Millsaps closer before falling 25-22, 25-20, 25-17 in Saturday's evening match. McKenna Bondarenko smashed 7 kills and Disalvo 6 to lead the Petrels. Dawson added another 24 assists while Cassell recorded a team-high 14 digs.
The Warriors of Hendrix College bested Oglethorpe on Sunday morning, 25-19, 25-18, 25-14. Disalvo led the squad with 11 kills and four block assists while Dawson setted another 23 assists. Molly Buckner turned in a team-high 14 digs in the loss.
In Sunday's finale the Petrels got the best of Rhodes in a 5-setter, 25-22, 25-18, 14-25, 21-25, 15-10. Bondarenko smashed 11 kills in the win while Disalvo spiked 10 to go along with 12 digs. Dawson set a season-high with 36 assists and Kate Cassell led the team with 16 digs and Molly Buckner guided 4 service aces.
With the results, Oglethorpe is now 3-12 on the season and will get set to face Piedmont on Pinholster Court this Thursday at 7:00 p.m.
