The Oglethorpe volleyball team enjoyed their best week of the season to date, splitting four matches and picking up their second SCAC win in the process.
The week started on Wednesday with a 3-1 (25-14, 27-25, 17-25, 25-18) win over Piedmont College on Pinholster Court. The Petrels earned the nonconference win behind 16 kills and 16 digs from freshman phenom Anna Marie Disalvo. Fellow freshman McKenna Bondarenko spiked home 10 kills of her own and Kate Cassell collected a team-high 17 digs in the victory.
The Petrels then made it three in a row for Coach Matthews and his staff by knocking off Sewanee in Birmingham on Saturday evening in a 5-set thriller, 3-2 (23-25, 26-28, 26-24, 25-16, 15-8). The Petrels dropped the first two sets narrowly but showed gritty determination by rallying for the win. Disalvo again starred for Oglethorpe with 19 kills, 25 digs and 4 service aces. Molly Buckner added 11 kills and 12 digs while Kate Cassell turned in a season and team-high 34 digs for the huge conference win.
The Petrels were bested by Centre in Saturday's nightcap, 3-0 (15-25, 16-25, 21-25) in another match where Disalvo paced the attack with 12 kills and 5 digs. The weekend concluded with a Sunday loss to host Birmingham-Southern, 3-0 (10-25, 15-25, 12-25). Brittin Dawson collected 14 assists in the loss on the Panthers home floor.
With the results, Oglethorpe is now 5-14 on the season and will face Reinhardt on Tuesday night on Pinholster Court at 7pm before travelling to San Antonio for weekend SCAC matches at Trinity University.
