Oglethorpe volleyball opened the 2012 campaign with a thrilling five-set victory at home (16-25, 23-25, 25-21, 15-6) over rival Piedmont College. The Stormy Petrels came back to win the last 3 sets after being down 0-2.
Oglethorpe was led by sophomore outside hitter Anna Marie Disalvo, who had 21 kills, while sophomore middle Lisa Inglis hit .727 with eight kills. Sophomore libero Megan MaKuck finished the match with 35 digs. Sophomore rightside McKenna Bondarenko had 11 kills, including a few crucial clutch kills. Senior setter Brittin Dawson had 102 assists and junior setter Kate Cassell contributed 40 assists with both setters running a more diversified offense then what the Petrels have done in the past.
The freshman trio of Erin Shelton (11 kills), Hayley Baer (.300 on 20 attempts) and Courtney Wienckowski (.357 with three blocks) helped carry the young Petrels through their first match of the year.
The Stormy Petrel netters play conference rival Berry College next Wednesday at 7 p.m. at Dorough Field House.
