The Southern Athletic Association has announced the volleyball Players of the Week for matches played Oct. 15 - 21. Oglethorpe players swept the awards this week as McKenna Bondarenko claimed the offensive honor while teammate Megan MaKuck snared the defensive prize.
Oglethorpe sophomore outside hitter McKenna Bondarenko had an excellent week for the Lady Petrels, as they went 2-1 with victories over Agnes Scott and Birmingham Southern and a loss to Millsaps. She totaled 63 kills over the three matches on 162 attempts. She pounded home 17 kills on 34 attempts Wednesday against Agnes Scott, then came up with 22 kills on 65 attempts in Oglethorpe's big upset over Birmingham Southern on Saturday. In a losing effort on Sunday, she contributed 24 kills on 63 attempts against Millsaps. Bondarenko leads the SAA in kills per set with 3.65 and is fifth in overall kills with 241.
Oglethorpe sophomore libero Megan MaKuck continued her great defensive work last week for the Lady Petrels, totaling 74 digs over the week's three matches. She contributed 12 digs in Wednesday's 3-0 victory over Agnes Scott, 38 digs in Saturday's five-set upset over Birmingham Southern, and 24 digs in Sunday's 3-1 loss at Millsaps. MaKuck's 5.76 digs per set this season leads the SAA in that category.
The Lady Petrels will take the court multiple times this week. First, they will travel to Demorest, Ga., to take on Piedmont tonight. Then they will be in Mount Berry, Ga., for the Berry College Invitational all weekend. They will take on Wesleyan and Faulkner on Friday, then do battle with Agnes Scott and Brenau on Saturday.
