MaKuck Wins SAA Defensive Player of the Year Honors, Three Lady Petrels on All-SAA Teams
Sophomore libero Megan MaKuck of the Oglethorpe volleyball team won the SAA Defensive Player of the Year award Friday evening, and three Lady Petrels, including MaKuck, made the SAA All-Conference teams for the 2012 season.
Sophomore outside hitter McKenna Bondarenko took First-Team All-SAA honors, while MaKuck garnered second-team honors and sophomore outside hitter/setter Anna Marie Disalvo made the honorable mention list.
MaKuck, who hails from Atlanta, was a digging machine for the Lady Petrels on her way to being named the Defensive Player of the Year. She led the conference in digs per set with 5.65, over a full dig per set more than the second-place finisher. Her 463 digs on the season led the conference, but MaKuck also showed great skill with her service. She fired 27 service aces on the season, ninth most in the league, and her average of 0.33 aces per set also placed her in the Top 10 in that category among the SAA's best.
Bondarenko finished first in the league in kills per set with 3.78, and finished fourth in the league in overall kills with 321. The 3.78 kills per set is almost half-a-kill more than the next closest competitor.
Disalvo started out the season as one of the best outside hitters in the league, then moved to setter midway through the season. Before she made the move to setter, the Lady Petrels were 3-10 on the season. After the switch, they were 6-6. This is her second all-conference team, as she was named Second-Team All-SCAC last season.
