The Oglethorpe volleyball team saw two members earn All-SAA honors at the awards banquet prior to the SAA Volleyball Tournament Friday morning in Mount Berry, Georgia. Freshman outside hitter Jacoby Sims took All-SAA Second Team honors in her first season as a Stormy Petrel, while sophomore libero Taryn North earned All-SAA Honorable Mention. It marked the first career all-conference honors for both Sims and North.
Sims enjoyed a truly outstanding freshman campaign. She finished the regular season at third in the league in kills per set with 3.24, and is also second in the league in points per set (3.8) and attacks per set (9.91). She also rounded out the regular season in the SAA's top 10 in total kills, total points and service aces. She accrued over 20 kills in a match three times this season. Her inclusion on the All-SAA Second Team marked the first time that a member of the Petrels earned a spot on either the first or second team since McKenna Bondarenko earned a spot on the All-SAA Second Team in 2013.
North came into her own in her second season as a Petrel, locking down the libero position from the start of the season forward. She finished the regular season second in the SAA in digs per set, tallying a 5.33 average that put her just outside of the top 50 nationally. In addition, her 442 total digs placed her fourth in the league in that category. She was named the SAA Volleyball Defensive Player of the Week on Oct. 9 for her work in the team's 3-1 win over Rhodes the previous weekend. She recorded a season-high 33 digs in that match, averaging 8.25 digs per set over the contest.
"I'm very proud of both Taryn and Jacoby," said Oglethorpe head coach Joseph Goodson. "Jacoby has been one of the best freshmen in the conference, and is already one of the league's top outside hitters. She's had a truly outstanding first season. Taryn has been a rock for us at libero all season long. She played well at libero right off the bat, and it gave us a lot of confidence as a team. Both Jacoby and Taryn are very deserving of this honor!"
The Petrels will get their SAA Tournament started on Friday directly after the banquet, as they'll take on top-seeded Berry at 1 p.m. from the Cage Center.
