The Oglethorpe volleyball team earned a victory Wednesday night in Dorough Field House, as they swept the visiting Agnes Scott Scotties, 3-0. With the win, they improved to 5-16 on the season.
The Petrels took a 3-0 lead in the first set, but Agnes Scott responded with five consecutive points to take a 5-3 lead. They extended their edge to 8-5, but Oglethorpe responded with a 13-2 run to take control of the set, building a 20-12 lead. A 4-point Agnes Scott run brought them back to within four at 23-19, but the home side finished it off with consecutive points to win 25-19.
In the second set, the Petrels used four consecutive points to take a 6-3 lead, but the visitors responded with four straight to vault into the lead, 8-7. A 5-point run put the Petrels back ahead, 12-8, but the Scotties again responded with a big run of their own, outscoring the Petrels 8-1 during the next stretch to take a 17-14 lead. Oglethorpe showed fortitude, though, responding with the run that would win the set. They finished the set on an 11-3 run and won 25-20 to take a 2-0 lead in the match.
With the third set tied 5-5, the home side went on an 8-0 run to take a commanding 13-5 lead. Agnes Scott cut it to 15-11, but the Petrels responded with three straight to push it back out to a 7-point lead, 18-11. The Scotties worked their way back into the set, outscoring the Petrels 10-3 to tie it, 21-21. From there, though, Oglethorpe won four of the final five points to win the set, 25-22, and clinch the match.
Sophomore Jacoby Sims led the way with 11 kills while senior middle hitter Ashlee Tolbert hit .444 for the match while collecting 5 kills and 4 blocks. Freshman setter Emma Williams led all participants with 20 assists.
The Petrels will be back in action from Dorough Field House this weekend. They'll host Hendrix Saturday at 1 p.m. before taking on Rhodes Sunday at 1 p.m. the program will celebrate Senior Day before Sunday's match.
