Senior Arielle Shaw and freshman Hayden Guthrie of the Oglethorpe track and field teams have earned weekly honors from the league's coaches for their efforts at the Emory Invitational Friday and Saturday. Shaw took home SAA Women's Field Athlete of the Week, while Guthrie garnered SAA Men's Track Athlete of the Week. It marked the first weekly award of Guthrie's career and the third of Shaw's.
Shaw had a great showing in her signature triple jump at the Emory Invitational. She won the event with a leap of 36 feet, 10.25 inches. It was her best jump of the season, and she currently sits first in the SAA and the South/Southeast region, as well as sixth nationally in the discipline.
Guthrie competed in his first collegiate 10,000-meter run and promptly broke a school record which had stood since 1982. He completed the 10-kilometer course in 32 minutes, 55.94 seconds, finishing ninth at the event and third among Division III athletes. His mark leads the pack in the SAA, while placing him third in the region and 26th nationally.
The Petrels will stay in Atlanta this weekend, returning to Emory for the Emory Classic Friday and Saturday.
