The Oglethorpe baseball team led for almost the entire game Saturday. But they couldn't get the third out of the ninth inning, and saw Centre mount a three-run rally to win, 5-3. Game 2 of the scheduled doubleheader was postponed due to rain and will be made up as part of a doubleheader on Sunday.
The Petrels got the first two outs in the ninth, up 3-2. However, Centre put five straight men on base to grab the two-run lead. A single and a walk put the go-ahead runs aboard and a two-run double was the big blow, driving in the eventual winning runs.
Oglethorpe took an early 3-0 lead in the first. Center fielder Jeff Pope led off with a single and shortstop Matt Cornwell walked. Then red-hot left fielder Brendan Pilger drilled a two-run triple off the right-fielder's glove to give the Petrels the lead. Catcher Jeff Brothers drove Pilger in during the next at-bat.
However, the Petrels would not score again, and were outhit 10-4.
They wasted a great effort from starting pitcher Emmett Goodman. He went seven innings and allowed only two runs on five hits. He walked two and struck out three. He wound up with no decision in the loss.
The loss drops the Petrels to 12-8 on the year, 2-1 in SCAC play. Due to the rain-out, there will be a doubleheader between the same two teams Sunday, starting at the previously scheduled time of noon.
