The Oglethorpe baseball team lost to Piedmont Thursday night in Demorest, Ga., 12-7. Cory Leff suffered the loss in relief and the Petrels fell to 2-6 on the season.
In a game that was postponed for over 24 hours due to rain, the Petrels fell behind early, but exploded with seven runs in the third inning. The rally gave Oglethorpe a 7-5 lead. The rally got started with a Hunter Riley walk, a Jake Spear single and a Vernon Trice walk. This loaded the bases with one out. Nick Manai followed with an RBI single to score the first run of the inning and the game for the Petrels.
Then with two outs, Jeff Brothers drove in a run with a walk to make the score 5-2 in favor of Piedmont. Joe Parillo came up next and slapped a two-run single to right field. A third run scored on a Piedmont error on the same play, and the Petrels had tied the game. Josh Morgan then bombed the first home run of his career, and Oglethorpe had their 7-5 lead.
Unfortunately, those were the last two runs they would score all game. Piedmont quickly re-tied the game in the fourth and came up with a big inning of their own in the seventh. They scored five runs in the inning, effectively putting the game away and leading to the final 12-7 scoreline.
Despite the seven-run inning, no Petrel had more than one hit in the game. Four Petrel pitchers combined to allow 11 earned runs on 13 hits, walking 10 batters and striking out five. Oglethorpe also committed four errors on the night.
The Petrels will next be in action this weekend, as they will take a road trip to Holly Springs, Miss., to take on Rust College in a three-game series. There will be a doubleheader on Saturday. It will get underway at noon. The single game on Sunday will begin at 1 p.m.
