Oglethorpe junior left-hander Kyle Babb was named the SAA Pitcher of the Week by the conference office on Monday for his part in the Stormy Petrels' 4-man combined no-hitter in Game 2 of Saturday's doubleheader sweep of Covenant. It marked the first time in Babb's career that he's received the award.
The junior left-hander earned his first win of the season after he allowed only one run and struck out six in four innings of work in a 4-1 victory. Babb did not allow a hit and posted a ratio of 13.5 strikeouts per nine innings. Combined with Alex Smith, Noah Cole and Jack Bartlewski, the Oglethorpe pitchers tossed a no-hitter against the Scots. It marked the fourth no-hitter in Oglethorpe's Division III history and the first since 1996. It also served as the first combined no-hitter to feature more than two pitchers in Oglethorpe's Division III history.
"Kyle picked where he left off last year," said Oglethorpe head coach Dan Giordano. "He was a strike throwing machine with three pitches and and kept hitters off balance. A no-hitter is always special, and to do it on Opening Day just adds to it. All of our pitchers were able to attack hitters and pitch to their strengths. I'm proud of the work they've put in so far."
Babb and the rest of the Petrels will now get set to take on the same Covenant team on Tuesday afternoon after sweeping their doubleheader on Saturday. The Petrels will travel up Lookout Mountain in Georgia's northwest corner at 2 p.m. on Tuesday. That will be followed by a 3-game home series with MacMurray, featuring a doubleheader Saturday at 1 p.m. and a single game Sunday at noon.
