The Oglethorpe men's golf team carded its best round of the 54-hole Golfweek Division III Fall Invitational on Tuesday in Miramar Beach, Florida, posting a 5-over-par 289 to move three spots up the leaderboard into a tie for 12th to finish the tournament at Sandestin Golf and Beach Resort's Raven Golf Club. They finished with an overall score of 37-over 889, putting them 47 strokes back of champions Emory.
Senior Jacob Arnett and sophomore Anthony DeRosa finished their weeks strong, finishing the tournament deadlocked in a tie for 24th at 5-over 218. That put them 12 strokes back of Methodist's Dan Shepherd, the individual medalist. Arnett posted his best round of the tournament on Tuesday, carding a 2-under 69 to shoot 18 spots up the leaderboard. DeRosa posted a 2-over 73 on the day for his second straight round of 73 or under.
Elsewhere, freshman Isley McClure fired an even-par 71 on Tuesday to beat his previous tournament best by four strokes and shoot 18 spots up the leaderboard into a tie for 45th at 11-over 224. Freshman Sean Fromme came up with a 5-over 76 on the day to finish tied for 75th and fellow freshman Justin Rickerson posted an 8-over 79 to come in tied for 78th.
Emory won the tournament going away, beating second-place Huntingdon by nine strokes. Southwestern (Texas) came in third at 14 strokes back, Methodist finished fourth at 19 back, and Illinois Wesleyan finished fifth at 23 back. Guilford, North Carolina Wesleyan, Saint John's (Minnesota), LaGrange and Hampden-Sydney rounded out the top 10.
The Petrels will head north to Rome Oct. 22 and 23 for the Chick-fil-A Collegiate Invitational, rounding out their fall season.
Second Round Recap
The Oglethorpe men's golf team bounced back from a tough round Sunday to post a solid 8-over-par 292 Monday in the second round of the Golfweek Division III Fall Invitational in Miramar Beach, Florida. That improved on their Day 1 score by 16 strokes and put them 36 strokes back of leaders Emory at 32-over 600 over the tournament's first 36 holes.
Sophomore Anthony DeRosa led the way for the Stormy Petrels on the day, firing a 2-under 69 to move 27 spots up the leaderboard into a tie for 27th at 3-over 145 for the tournament. He posted five birdies on the day and was only tripped up by a triple bogey on the 18th. He recovered from that for three of his five birdies over the back nine of his round, though (which took place on the front nine of the golf course). He sits seven strokes back of a 3-way tie for first between Huntingdon's Stephen Shephard, Guilford's James Mishoe, and Sutherland Stith of Southwestern (Texas).
Senior Jacob Arnett posted three birdies en route to a 2-over 73 on the day, putting him in a tie for 42nd at 7-over 149. He suffered a triple bogey on the 18th, as well, but recovered for a 2-under 33 on the front nine.
Elsewhere, freshmen Isley McClure and Sean Fromme fired rounds of 4-over 75 to finish tied for 63rd and 76th, respectively, while fellow freshman Justin Rickerson posted a 6-over 77 to come in tied for 68th.
Emory held a 6-stroke lead after Day 2 with a 4-under 564 for the tournament. Huntingdon finished the day in second, while Southwestern came in third at 10 strokes back. Methodist and Guilford finished 36 holes tied for fourth at 15 strokes back. Illinois Wesleyan, Hampden-Sydney, LaGrange, North Carolina Wesleyan and Saint John's (Minnesota) rounded out the top 10.
The Petrels will be back on the course at Sandestin Golf and Beach Resort's Raven Golf Club Tuesday morning, as they'll tee off from the 10th hole at 9:15 a.m. Eastern.
First Round Recap
The Oglethorpe men's golf team suffered a tough first round Sunday at the Golfweek Division III Fall Invitational, posting a 24-over-par 308 on the day to finish tied for 16th, 36 strokes back of first-place Emory.
None of the five Stormy Petrels finished the day in the top half of the field, leading to the difficult round. Senior Jacob Arnett and sophomore Anthony DeRosa finished the day tied for 54th after posting scores of 5-over-par 76 on the Raven Golf Club course at Sandestin Golf and Beach Resort in Miramar Beach, Florida. That put them 10 strokes back of Emory's Eric Yiu, the individual leader.
Emory ran away from the field in the opening round of the tournament, firing a 12-under 272 on the day. Southwestern (Texas) finished second, 10 strokes back of that, while Carnegie Mellon came in third, 13 back, and Huntingdon and North Carolina Wesleyan tied for fourth, 17 back. LaGrange, Guilford, Hampden-Sydney, Illinois Wesleyan, Methodist and Saint John's (Minnesota) rounded out the top 10, with the latter three tied for ninth.
The Petrels will be back out on the course bright and early Monday morning, as they'll tee off from the 10th hole at the Raven at 8:45 a.m. Eastern. They'll complete the 54-hole tournament on Tuesday.
