The Golf Coaches Association of America (GCAA) selected Oglethorpe senior men's golfer Jacob Arnett to compete in the prestigious Patriot All-America Invitational this week. It marked the eighth time that a member of the Stormy Petrels has earned a spot in the tournament and the first since 2016.
The tournament features GCAA All-Americans from every level of college golf including all three NCAA divisions, the NAIA and junior college. Invitations are made on a tiered basis for the 84-player field, with first team All-Americans chosen first regardless of level, followed by second team All-Americans, then third team All-Americans.
Arnett received All-America second team accolades from the GCAA in May, making him the 29th All-American in program history. It also marked his second straight season as an All-American, making him the ninth Stormy Petrel men's golfer to earn multiple career All-America honors.
The GCAA All-Americans will be joined at the event by junior golf first team all-Americans competing in their freshman year of college, select participants from the U.S. service academies, and GCAA international honorees.
"Jake saw this as one of his goals for his senior year," said Oglethorpe director of golf Jim Owen, "and I was thrilled when he told me that he received the invitation. It has become one of the highest honors an Oglethorpe golfer can achieve."
Five other Division III golfers join Arnett at the 2018 Patriot All-America. They include Josh Gibson of Hope, Matt Organisak of Emory, Cade Osgood of Southwestern (Texas), Stephen Shephard of Huntingdon and Rob Wuethrich of Illinois Wesleyan.
Throughout the 54-hole event, each of the 84 participants honors a fallen or severely injured soldier by carrying a golf bag bearing the name of that individual. Arnett's bag will bear the name of Marine Gunnery Sgt. Jonathan W. Gifford, who was killed in combat operations in Afghanistan in 2012 at 34 years of age.
The Wigwam golf resort in Litchfield Park, Arizona, hosts the Patriot All-America Dec. 29-31.
