The Oglethorpe men's golf team finished fourth at their own Jekyll Island Collegiate Invitational on Sunday, posting a 2-over-par 866 over 54 holes to come in eight strokes back of champion Emory. The Stormy Petrels fired a 2-under 286 on the day, marking the second consecutive round in which they posted that mark.
The Petrels did not get off to a good start on the Pine Lakes course at Jekyll Island Golf Club, posting a score of 7 over par over their opening four holes. However, they recovered and shot 9 under the rest of the way, securing their fourth-place finish out of 30 teams amidst an impressive national field. Oglethorpe shot 8 under on the back nine, collecting nine birdies and getting an eagle from senior Kyle Shealy on the 18th hole.
Sophomore Anthony DeRosa posted a 2-under 70 on the day to finish the tournament tied for fourth at 5-under 211. That put him seven strokes back of Huntingdon's Stephen Shephard, the individual medalist. Senior Jacob Arnett also earned a top 10 finish, posting a 2-under 70 on the day and 3-under 213 for the tournament. He finished nine strokes back of the lead.
Shealy earned a top 30 finish, tying for 29th by posting 3-over 219 for the tournament and 1-over 73 on the day. Freshman Justin Rickerson rounded out the Oglethorpe scorers by finishing 62nd. He shot 1-over 73 on the day and came in at 10-over 226 for the tournament. Freshman Isley McClure shot 5-over 77 on the day and 13-over 229 for the tournament.
Freshmen Justin Vincent and Walker Bottomley competed over on the Oleander course in a separate tournament for individuals only. Vincent finished eighth in the event after recording 3-over 75 on the day to post a 54-hole total of 8-over 224. He finished 10 strokes back of the winner, Greensboro's Connor Brown. Bottomley finished 14th in the event, posting a 7-over 79 on Sunday and finishing at 15-over 231 to come in 17 strokes back.
The Petrels will now get a couple weeks off before they hit the course again April 5-7 for the Camp Lejeune Intercollegiate Golf Championship from North Carolina.
Second Round Recap
The Oglethorpe men's golf team enjoyed an outstanding Saturday at the Jekyll Island Golf Club, firing a 2-under-par 286 on the day to vault five spots up the leaderboard into fourth place at 4-over 580 over 36 holes at the Jekyll Island Collegiate Invitational. They'll enter Sunday's final round on the club's Pine Lakes course eight strokes behind first-place Emory.
Sophomore Anthony DeRosa enjoyed an outstanding day, firing a 4-under 68 to enter the clubhouse tied for fifth at just four strokes back of Huntingdon's Drew Mathers for the individual lead. Senior Jacob Arnett almost matched DeRosa's outstanding round, firing a 3-under 69 on the day and finishing the day tied for 16th, eight strokes back. Senior Kyle Shealy continued his solid tournament, shooting a 2-over 74 on the day and coming in tied for 33rd. Freshman Isley McClure posted a 3-over 75 and sits at 8-over 152 for the tournament, while fellow freshman Justin Rickerson shot a 6-over 78 on the day to finish his first 36 holes at 9-over 153.
Freshmen Justin Vincent and Walker Bottomley both finished Saturday in the top 10 at the individuals tournament on the Oleander course. Vincent shot a 1-under 71 on the day and came in tied for sixth, while Bottomley posted a 5-over 77 to tie for 10th entering Sunday's final round.
The main Petrel team will get their final round started at 9:40 a.m. on the Pine Lakes course. Vincent and Bottomley will tee off at 9:20 a.m. from the 10th hole of the Oleander course.
First Round Recap
The Oglethorpe men's golf team finished their opening round of the Jekyll Island Collegiate Invitational Friday in ninth place after posting a 6-over-par 294 on the Pine Lakes course at the Jekyll Island Golf Club. That put them six strokes back of a tie between Illinois Wesleyan and LaGrange.
The Petrels were led by senior Kyle Shealy, who posted an even-par 72 on the day to finish tied for 19th at four strokes back of a three-way tie for first. Sophomore Anthony DeRosa came in at 1-over 73 and finished the day tied for 27th, five back of the lead, while senior Jacob Arnett recorded a 2-over 74 to finish the day tied for 44th at six strokes back. Freshman Justin Rickerson posted a 3-over 75 to finish the opening round tied for 51st, while freshman Isley McClure posted a 5-over 77.
Oglethorpe had two players competing in the individuals only tournament on the Oleander course. Freshman Walker Bottomley put up a 3-over 75 on the day to finish the day tied for 10th, six strokes back of the leader, Emory's Anthony Muscato. Fellow freshman Justin Vincent shot a 6-over 78 to wind up his round tied for 17th.
The Petrels will be back in action from the Pine Lakes course starting at 9:30 a.m. Saturday.
