The Oglethorpe men's golf team shot an 8-over-par 292 Tuesday in the final round of the Golfweek Division III Fall Invitational at Sandestin Golf and Beach Resort in Miramar Beach, Florida, settling into 11th place out of 18 teams with a 54-hole score of 18-over 870. That mark put them 33 strokes behind Illinois Wesleyan, who won the championship by nine strokes over their nearest competitor.
The Stormy Petrels got nine birdies on the back nine at Sandestin's Raven Golf Club, where they started their morning, but also tallied 11 holes of bogey or worse. They were more consistent on the front nine, recording just four birdies but also reducing their bogey total to eight.
Freshman Britt Pero was the highest-finishing Petrel on the week, coming in tied for 16th with a 1-over 214 over 54 holes. That put him 13 behind Rob Wuethrich of Illinois Wesleyan, the individual champion. He fired a 3-over 74 on Tuesday to complete his tournament.
Sophomore Isley McClure fired the best round of the day by a Petrel, carding 1-under 70 to move 11 spots up the leaderboard into a tie for 32nd at 5-over 218. Junior Kenny Park came in just ahead of him for the week, posting 3-over 216. He shot even-par 71 on Tuesday.
Sophomore Justin Rickerson recorded a 6-over 77 on Tuesday and finished his tournament tied for 51st out of 90 participants at 9-over 222. Junior Anthony DeRosa finished his tournament with a 7-over 78 for the day and a 25-over 238 for the week.
"We had a good tournament overall," said Oglethorpe Director of Golf Jim Owen, "but we just couldn't get consistent enough play to make our way into the top 10. I did think that our group has improved on its course management over this tournament and Royal Lakes. I thought we did a good job of attacking the course and an outstanding job on the par-5s this week. We just need that little extra bit of consistency."
This tournament concludes the main part of the Petrels' fall schedule, but they travel back to Georgia for some individual competition at the Chick-fil-A Collegiate Invitational Oct. 21 and 22 in Rome.
