Majors Use Strong 2nd Half to Top Petrels

The men's lacrosse team jumped out to a 5-1 lead over Millsaps in Jackson, Miss. on Sunday afternoon but the Majors rallied to win 13-8. With the score tied 6 apiece at halftime, the Majors outscored the Petrels 6-1 in a decisive third quarter that lifted them to victory.

The Petrels started hot and looked poised to claim their second SCAC win of the season as John Brewer fed Jake Godwin for a strike just 48 seconds into the contest. Arness Holsey, Privce Hamilton and John Brewer each added first quarter goals to give Oglethorpe a 4-1 lead after the first 15 minutes.

Holsey struck again to start the scoring in the second period and give the Petrels their largest lead at 5-1. Minutes later, Godwin added his second strike of the contest to give Oglethorpe a 6-2 advantage, but that's when things went downhill. The Majors ripped off four consecutive strikes to tie the score at halftime and then netted the first three of the third quarter to suddenly open up a 9-6 advantage. By the time the third quarter ended, Millsaps held a 12-7 lead that the Petrels would not challenge in the fourth.

Godwin and Holsey led the Petrels with 2 goals apiece while Coleman Plaisted scored once and added two assists in the loss. Cooper O'Brien made 16 saves in goal for Oglethorpe.

The Petrels are now 1-10 on the season. They close out the regular season this week with home tilts against Huntingdon (Wednesday, 3:30 p.m.), Sewanee (Friday, 3:30 p.m.) and Centre (Sunday at 1 p.m.)
