The Oglethorpe men's lacrosse team played at the Oglethorpe Track and Field in their home opener Thursday afternoon after it was delayed by a postponement in February. The Stormy Petrels fell to the visiting Methodist Monarchs 14-6 and fell to 3-2 on the season.
The Monarchs scored the first four goals of the game, outscoring the Petrels 4-0 in the first quarter. Oglethorpe answered back with a pair of goals in the second quarter, though, as junior attackman Cameron Ritter scored at the 13:53 mark and freshman attackman Andrew Collins followed up with a goal of his own to make it 4-2 with 4:29 until halftime. However, the visitors finished the half with three straight goals to make it 7-2 at the break.
In the second half, the Monarchs scored four of the next five to build their lead to 11-3. Collins scored three goals in the third quarter, including two in a row midway through the period. Sophomore attackman Tyler Rover added his first career goal off an assist from sophomore middie Brian Green in the latter half of the period, but Methodist still outscored Oglethorpe 7-4 during the third quarter en route to the eight-goal win.
Collins led the team with four goals. Meanwhile, junior middie Jack Brand and sophomore middie Charles Broome collected five ground balls apiece to lead the team. Freshman goalie Addison Irwin caused five turnovers to lead the squad while making 12 saves.
Methodist outshot Oglethorpe 26-19 on goal and scooped 47 ground balls to the Petrels' 35. The visitors were successful on 27 of 34 clear attempts while Oglethorpe went 17-of-31 in that department. Both teams committed 31 turnovers on the afternoon.
The Petrels get back to action Saturday when they welcome Earlham to the Oglethorpe Track and Field at 1 p.m. After that, they'll take a week off before returning to the field to go against Greensboro March 16 at 4 p.m.
