Men's Soccer Scores Two in Final 10 Minutes to Start SAA Play on Right Foot

The Oglethorpe men's soccer team scored a pair of goals in the final 10 minutes of their SAA opener with Centre in Danville, Kentucky, Saturday afternoon, turning what had been a scoreless nailbiter into a 2-0 victory over the home side. The victory improved the Stormy Petrels to 2-2 on the season overall and 1-0 in SAA play.

The two teams went back and forth all day in a tense, scoreless battle and it looked as if the game might head to extra time. However, freshman forward Abraham Lopez finally broke through for the visitors in the 84th minute, giving them the edge they'd been looking for all afternoon. Moments later, junior forward Gabriel Alvarez finished his chance with aplomb, giving the Petrels a commanding 2-0 lead in the 89th minute. From there, Oglethorpe cruised to the victory.

The had been fairly even up to the final 10 minutes, as Oglethorpe outshot Centre 13-12 for the game. The Petrels outshot their opponents 6-5 in the first half, but the two teams each took 7 shots in the second.

Junior goalkeeper Scott Zoino tallied 6 saves for the game without allowing a goal, earning his second shutout of the season.

The Petrels will be back in action on Monday, as they head home to face off against Brevard at 2 p.m. from the Oglethorpe Track and Field. After that, they'll host Sewanee Saturday at noon in their SAA home opener.
