The Oglethorpe men's soccer team extended their SAA unbeaten streak to 17 games and their SAA winning streak to nine Friday night in Jackson, Mississippi, as they used 3 first-half goals to run past homestanding Millsaps, 3-1. The victory improved the Stormy Petrels to 6-2 on the season overall and 3-0 in SAA play.
The Petrels got off and running immediately, pummeling the Majors over the opening five minutes. Senior midfielder Topher Marshall took a pass from senior forward Devon Patterson and finished past Major goalkeeper Tyler Andrews just 17 seconds into the contest. Then, freshman midfielder Affonso Temporal scored around two minutes later, his third-minute goal giving Oglethorpe a 2-0 advantage. It didn't stop there, as Temporal scored again in the fourth minute, this time off an assist from junior midfielder Andrew Grodhaus. Oglethorpe had a 3-0 advantage before five minutes were up in the contest.
For the half, Oglethorpe outshot Millsaps 10-4, and they took their 3-0 lead into the halftime break.
The Oglethorpe domination of the shot count continued in the second half, as they recorded 7 shots to the Majors' three. Millsaps pulled a goal back in the 54th minute, but they were unable to get any closer than 3-1.
For the game, the Petrels outshot the Majors 17-7 overall and 10-4 in shots on goal. Both teams earned 5 corner kicks on the night.
The Petrels will look to continue their conference unbeaten streak on Sunday, when they travel to Alabama to take on Birmingham-Southern at 3:30 p.m. Eastern.
