The Oglethorpe men's soccer team earned a 3-1 victory over Birmingham-Southern Sunday afternoon in Alabama. With the victory, they extended their SAA unbeaten streak to 18 games, their SAA winning streak to 10 games, and their overall winning streak to six games. They also extended their SAA lead to three points after knocking a Panther team that was in second place coming into the day down the standings. The win improved the Stormy Petrels' record to 7-2 overall and 4-0 in conference play.
The Petrels seemed to relish the opportunity in front of them with the 1-2 SAA matchup against Birmingham-Southern on Sunday. They went on the attack early against Birmingham-Southern. peppering goalkeeper Galen Curry with shot after shot over the opening 45 minutes and outshooting the home side 17-2 over that stretch. Curry made 7 saves for the period, but Oglethorpe was able to break through in the 29th minute. Junior midfielder Josh Bronstorph took a feed from fellow junior midfielder Adam Sole and finished past Curry to give his team a 1-0 lead. The score remained the same heading into the halftime break.
The visitors doubled their lead early in the second half. Freshman midfielder Angel Guevara converted from the penalty spot in the 56th minute to extend the Oglethorpe advantage to 2-0. The Panthers quickly pulled a goal back off a penalty kick of their own in the 63rd minute, but the Petrels all but put the game away with a Sole goal in the 73rd. They cruised to the 3-1 victory from there.
For the game, Oglethorpe outshot Birmingham-Southern 26-7 overall and 13-6 in shots on goal. They also took eight corner kicks to just two for the home side.
The Petrels will be back in action on Friday, when they take on Hendrix from the Oglethorpe Track and Field at approximately 7 p.m. They'll welcome Rhodes on Sunday for Senior Day festivities.
